Tips to Help with Your Mid-Year Check-In

Tips to Help with Your Mid-Year Check-In

We are more than half-way through the year and it is very important that supervisors and employees are taking time to review progress towards our essential wins.
Possible topics to consider to touch on during check-in are:

  • Progress on individual goals and key learnings
  • Barriers to achieving progress and plans to mitigate
  • Changes to organizational or individual goals
  • Performance and development highlights

Supervisor tips:

  • Take time to prepare key highlights.  It is always important to highlight key accomplishments that have progression towards meeting your goals.
  • Ensure key learnings / barriers have examples that you and the employee can talk thru and come up with a plan to mitigate.
  • As you have coaching conversations in the future during your 1:1’s, ensure the following:
    • Ask questions to guide learning and change
    • Facilitate a dialogue to create a true partnership
    • Help the coachee think for him or herself
    • Focus on solutions (the future)
    • Coachee is motivated

Employee tips:

  • Take time to prepare key highlights and key learnings.  Also take time to think about where you feel you have opportunities to improve.  It’s our tendency to want to just focus on our highlights, but it’s harder to think about our barriers.  When you and your supervisor can align and both walk in with key learnings, it enables focus of the conversation on mitigation plans to get through any barriers you may have.
  • Be an active participant in your check-in.  It is not about your supervisor telling you what you have accomplished to date, but it’s more for you to engage in the conversation.
  • Ask questions, be active in your plan for key learnings, and most of all, be open!
