This communication is to make you aware of key decisions and provide near-term guidance for those application owners that will need to retain Oracle in our future state environment.
What is happening?
To better support the application owners with Oracle dependencies, the linked presentation contains information related to licensing, environment provisioning, and DBA support for these databases. In summary, the following activities are in progress:
- Elanco procurement is working on the Master Service Agreement with Oracle and will also lead license negotiations representing our post-TSA enterprise requirements.
- The EDNA organization will stand up a near-term agreement with a service provider for DBA support as we begin to migrate applications into our Elanco environments.
- Processes for requesting infrastructure resources for hosting is integrated into the ServiceNow request process as communicated in a previous Unite post.
Why is this happening?
In line with the Enterprise Architecture Principles, new Elanco data stores must prioritize open-source technologies such as Postgres or Redis. However, it is understood that some applications must continue to use Oracle based on a direct vendor dependency, making this change challenging in the short term.
How does it impact me?
Application owners will NOT need to manage a separate procurement process at this point but will need to plan for license costs in functional business plans.
Whilst ETS is responsible for the infrastructure including network, hypervisor, and base operating system, and will provision resources and access via ServiceNow request, Application owners are responsible for database installation, configuration, maintenance, and support.
- Near-term: Recognizing the near-term resource gap for DBA support, the EDNA organization will stand up a contract for DBAs – similar to the Lilly model – to provide support as application migrations are initiating.
- Long-term: This will be in scope with the ADM vendor for providing application/database support, development, and maintenance.
What action do I need to take?
Application owners needing Oracle licenses in the new Elanco environment should inform the EDNA team (Scott Huston) by Sep 6th so the need and timing can be captured in the enterprise discussion.
